Halau Standards of Conduct
• Always behave respectfully in the Halau, its grounds towards haumana (students), and guest.
• The Halau is a grateful guest of the facility. Please treat the facility with respect at all times.
• Please learn the Halau ‘Oli (Chant) before entering and or starting of Halau. You may get a copy of the ‘Oli from the Alaka’i or Kumu.
• Please remove shoes before entering class. No shoes are to worn in the Halau.
• Please silence your cell phones
• Students will practice pa’a ka waha (if words are exiting your mouth, wisdom cannot come in). When Kumu or Alaka’i are speaking, quietly listen. Learn by observing.
• Hula Pa’u skirts must be treated with care and respect, Pa’u skirts are to be put on class and not worn to the Halau. Fold them carefully when putting them away. Students are responsible to supply their own Pa’u skirts, for more information on where and how to get your Pa’u please ask your Alaka’i or Kumu.
• Experienced hula dancers take their place at the front of the class, beginners and new comers line up behind unless requested to come forward.
• If permitted to visit a class that is not your own, remain quietly in the back of the class as you are a guest.
• During class, please hold your questions until Kumu or Alaka’i are finished teaching and ask if there are questions, Always ask question to your Kumu or Alaka’i , and not your fellow students in order toensure you understand.
• If you wish to videotape a class in order to assist in learning, please obtain permission beforehand. Videotaping is for your use only and may not be distributed or shared without Kumu’s permission, or you may use our practice page on Facebook. Setting up cameras and videotaping cannot interrupt or create obstacles in class. It is not permitted to share choreography of any dance without permission from Kumu.
• Children are not permitted to run through or play on Halau grounds or to interrupt/disrupt classes.
• Be courteous to the class. If you are going to be late, let Alaka’i or Kumu know prior to class. If you cannot attend class, please contact the Alaka’i ahead of time. It is your kuleana (responsibility) to get any missed material or information to catch up. It is ok to text the Alaka’i or Kumu.

Halau Rules
• Non-members are not allowed on the Halau grounds at any time without permission of Kumu.
• Do not lean on the walls and/or put any foot on the walls and/ or spread on the floor.
• Horseplay is not allowed in the Halau at any time.
• The Halau equipment is strictly off limits at all times.
• Do not touch the mirrors or leave handprints on front doors or windows.
• Students are to bring their own water to Halau water must be in bottles with caps on them. Water is available for purchased at the Halau for $1.
• Family members are not permitted to sit in keiki classes without the permission of the Kumu, as it is too distracting to the students.
• Children may not be left unattended at the Halau; they must be picked up by the start of the next class (15 min. after their class)
• All students will begin at level 1, and will be placed at the appropriate level class once Kumu has made a determination.
• Students must develop the discipline to practice at home, as well as memorizing kahea by the next class.
• Please update your contact information as soon as it changes. We contact students primarily by phone. It is also important to check the Halau website for updates, events, and class changes or cancellations.
• If you decide this class is not for you, and you decide to join another halau, please let Kumu know and let him know why it is not for you. You will always go with Kumu’s blessing and we want you to learn from your experience. If you leave to try other halau and wish to return, please contact Kumu.
• It is it is important to know that you cannot dance under more than one Kumu or belong to more than one halau at a time.
• The Halau Na waiho’olu’u (colors) are ‘ula’ula (red) & melemele (yellow)
• All students are not to cut or alter their hair color, style without the Kumu’s permission
• Halau Hula O Na Pua O Pakipika reserves the right to determine the suitability of all of all Haumana.

Class Conduct & Wearables
• Hair must be clean! No uku’s (lice)
• Garments should be neat, clean and not wrinkled
• Wahine, Gracious ladies, Keiki li’i, Opio wahine should wear Red pa’u Yellow camisoles top (ask your Alaka’i or Kumu where to get them from) , red pareau for Polynesian section.
• Kane & Opio kane should wear black loose shorts and yellow plain T-shirts (ask your Alaka’i or Kumu where to get them from). No shirts for Polynesian section.
• Wahine, Gracious ladies, Keiki li’i, Opio wahine should have hair up and away for their face with a flower.
• Kane & Opio kane should have their hair in a ponytail away form your face.
• Personal hygiene is very important! If body odors are noticeable, you may be asked to leave class.
